What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are strong titanium posts surgically placed directly into the jawbone and capped with natural replacement teeth that give the same security and functionality as your original teeth. They can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or a whole arch of teeth. Dental implants help prevent surrounding teeth from shifting, resolve bite issues or jaw joint pain, restore facial tissue, and improve your smile. The best part is that dental implants can be used right away!
Types of Dental Implants
We offer several types of implants to accommodate different bone structures and patient needs:
Endosteal Implants
These are surgically embedded directly into the jawbone and are artificial tooth roots. Typically made of titanium, they support one or multiple prosthetic teeth and are ideal for most candidates with good bone health.
Subperiosteal Implants
Subperiosteal implants, custom-fitted and anchored with a metal framework, are used for patients with limited bone height or volume. They rest on top of the jawbone but underneath the gum tissue.
Zygomatic Implants
These are reserved for patients with severe bone loss in the upper jaw. Instead of being placed in the jawbone, they are anchored into the zygomatic (cheek) bone, offering an alternative when traditional implants are not viable.

Benefits of Implant Treatment
-
Preservation of bone structure: Implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing bone loss that commonly occurs after tooth extraction or prolonged denture use.
-
Improved chewing and speech: Implants function like natural teeth, allowing patients to eat various foods and speak without slippage or discomfort.
-
Stability and durability: Unlike removable dentures, implants remain securely anchored, reducing the risk of shifting or falling out.
-
Aesthetic integration: Dental implants closely resemble natural teeth, restoring facial structure and confidence without compromising surrounding teeth.

Implants Vs. Other Tooth Replacement Options
When comparing dental implants to options like partial dentures or dental bridges, several distinctions become clear:
-
Longevity: Implants tend to last longer with proper care.
-
Jawbone health: Only implants help maintain bone density.
-
Maintenance: Implants require no special adhesives or removal for cleaning.
-
Adjacent teeth: Bridges often require the alteration of neighbouring teeth, while implants are self-supporting.

Overview of the Dental Implant Procedure
First, one of our dentists will conduct a comprehensive examination and assessment of your oral health. This includes X-rays and 3D imaging to evaluate bone structure and determine if dental implants are right for you.
We'll start the first stage if you're deemed a good candidate. This involves surgically placing the titanium dental implant into your jawbone beneath your gum tissue. The area is then allowed to heal, and the implant will gradually bond with the bone and attach to the gum.
Once the healing process is complete, we'll begin the second stage. This consists of attaching an abutment to the implant, which connects the implant and the artificial tooth. Then, we'll create a custom replacement tooth.
Finally, we'll complete stage three by securely attaching the customized dental crown or bridge to the abutment, providing a natural-looking and functional replacement tooth. Properly fitting the replacement tooth into the abutment may take several appointments.
Aftercare Tips
-
Oral hygiene: Brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and using non-abrasive toothpaste helps maintain implant surfaces.
-
Regular checkups: Routine visits allow for early detection of issues such as peri-implantitis.
-
Lifestyle choices: Avoiding smoking and limiting consumption of sugary or acidic foods supports implant health.
-
Monitoring: Patients should promptly report any pain, swelling, or mobility in the implant to their dentist.
