Immediate Care: What to Do Right After Extraction

Right after your tooth extraction, your dentist will place a gauze pad over the site. Gently bite down to help form a blood clot that will protect the area and start the healing process. Keep the gauze in place for 30 to 45 minutes or until bleeding slows. Mild bleeding or oozing is normal during the first day.

To manage pain and swelling, take prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief as directed. Applying a cold compress to your cheek in 10-minute intervals can reduce swelling.

Do’s and Don’ts for the First 24 Hours

Proper tooth extraction aftercare at this stage is crucial.

  • Do rest and keep your head elevated to minimize bleeding and swelling.

  • Do avoid strenuous activities that could increase bleeding.

  • Don’t rinse your mouth vigorously or use mouthwash for 24 hours.

  • Don’t smoke, drink alcohol, or use a straw, as these can dislodge the clot.

  • Don’t spit forcefully or suck on candies or ice pops.

Keeping Your Mouth Clean

Good oral hygiene is vital for effective tooth extraction aftercare, so after 24 hours, gently rinse the extraction site with warm saltwater (½ teaspoon salt in a glass of warm water) 2-3 times daily. This helps keep the site clean and promotes healing. You can carefully brush your teeth but avoid the extraction site until your dentist says it’s safe to brush in the area.

What to Eat and Drink

Diet plays an important role in the tooth extraction healing process:

·       Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and lukewarm soups for several days.

·       Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or sticky foods that might irritate the site or get stuck.

·       Drink plenty of water but avoid carbonated or hot beverages during early recovery.

When to Contact Your Dentist

Some discomfort is normal, but prompt attention is part of good tooth extraction aftercare. Therefore, contact your dental clinic if you experience:

  • Severe or worsening pain after 48 hours.

  • Heavy or uncontrollable bleeding.

  • Increasing swelling or spreading redness.

  • Signs of infection such as fever, pus, or bad breath.

  • Allergic reactions or unusual symptoms.

Understanding Your Recovery Timeline

Knowing the potential timeline for recovery can help you manage expectations during the tooth extraction healing process.

·       Pain and swelling usually reach their peak approximately 48 hours after the onset, followed by gradual improvement.

·       Gum tissue usually heals within 2-4 weeks, while bone remodeling takes longer.
